I make music for media (primarily animation). Work on Disney, Nickelodeon, Hulu, and tons of indies. Stylistically versatile, overly verbose, and constantly looking for work.

A quick look into how minor changes in music can reshape the emotional context of a story beat

Posted by sleepFacingWest - June 25th, 2024

I recently had the opportunity to score the trailer for an upcoming independent animated series called Hearts of Titan.

While it's well-known that a musical score helps communicate the emotional impact of a scene, it's often overlooked at just how much it can completely reshape how a story beat is understood.

I was brought onto this project just to help out with the trailer, so I hadn't seen any scripts or full stories which would help me understand the context of some of the clips that were used for this teaser. Without extensive spotting notes, I was initially left to my own devices to figure out how each scene should feel. This short ( < 1min) video shows my initial take vs what I ended up with after receiving revision requests. Though the changes to the music are subtle, it's a good example of how the context of a scene can be interpreted completely differently simply based on the music that is used to underscore it.
